Navigating Qatar’s Souq Waqif
Dating back from the 20th century, Qatar’s Souq Waqif is situated in the capital city of Doha. Among its vibrant streets and stalls you can find traditional garments, hand-made items such as crafts and rugs, spices, and souvenirs, as well as restaurants.
The souq’s vibrancy and historical architecture make it a great, lively place to spend some time, be it alone or with friends and family; it is a great spot to shop, try local cuisine, or relax at a shisha bar.
However, navigating souqs - or markets - can be overwhelming. With a multitude of similar offerings and plenty of people, it can be challenging to figure out what you’re doing and to maximize your time. As someone who has been to Souq Waqif a number of times, here are my tips on getting the most out of your time there.
Visit the souq at night
While visiting the souq is always a good time, there is something about the atmosphere at night that makes it really special. At night, the lights illuminate the traditional architecture, and the entire place is rich with culture as music plays and more locals walk through the streets and rummage and haggle in the shops.
Accept what is offered to you
Oftentimes, while haggling or visiting a shop, shop-owners will offer you treats or delicacies, most often tea. Not only is it a sign of respect and appreciation to accept the tea, but it is also absolutely delicious. Generally lightly spiced, with just the right amount of sugar, Qatari tea provides the perfect boost of energy to combat the heat.
Never pay full price
Haggling is almost expected of you when visiting a souq. Check out different shops and offerings to gauge what the prices are elsewhere. Start bidding at your lowest offer and feel free to walk away if the shop-owner’s last offer is too high for you. Chances are, their last offer will decrease once they notice you’re willing to walk away.
Go on an empty stomach
During your time at Souq Waqif, you’ll come across a number of carts and stalls selling local snacks and foods. In addition to trying the various snacks and beverages, be sure to have a meal at Shujaa Kebabs, where you can enjoy fresh hummus, grilled vegetables, kebab, and delicious, fresh bread.
Spend time at the Falcon Souq
The Falcon Souq is a must-see at Souq Waqif, which will offer you insight into falconry, which is considered a historic art in Qatar. While some tourists may, respectfully so, find the Falcon Souq disturbing, it is an essential part of Qatari culture that dates back hundreds of years.
Souq Waqif is open 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Saturday through Thursday, and 3 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Fridays.
